The District:
The Cosmopolis School District is a non-high district serving preschool through sixth grade students with a current enrollment of 197 students. The district's secondary students in grades seven through twelve attend either Aberdeen School District or North River School District. Our staff is composed of 32 full or part time employees: 12 certificated staff and 20 classified staff.
The school campus is on a single site. There is a large classroom building, a standard sized gymnasium, and an auditorium. The facilities are well-maintained and spacious. The elementary school is comprised of a committed group of educators who have created a welcoming and nurturing environment. The focus of the building continues to be upon strengthening the curriculum, and improving student performance as measured by the Measurement of Student Progress (MSP). Historically, our students consistently score well on standardized tests. The school's staff is committed to improving their instructional effectiveness. This is accomplished through a professional development program available to all staff members. This past year a new reading program was adopted with a Response to Intervention (RTI) approach. Next year our math curriculum will be the main focus.
The school is the center of activity in our community. We are fortunate to have parents who support the school's purpose, who want their children to succeed, and are willing to take an active role in their child's education. The Cosmopolis Parent, Teacher, Student Organization (PTSO) sponsors several fundraising activities to support technology, swimming lessons, curriculum purchases, and field day activities.
The district has an unblemished record of levy and bond support. In February, the district passed its Maintenance and Operations levy at 68%.
The Cosmopolis Community:
The city of Cosmopolis is located in Grays Harbor County, Washington, just a short distance from Aberdeen, on Highway 101. Cosmopolis is rich in the tradition of the timber, shellfish, and fishing industries.
Our county is a great place for many outdoor activities. The forested areas in the county are prime hunting grounds for deer and elk. Nearby Westport and Ilwaco provide some of the best ocean fishing in the Northwest. The ocean beaches, only one-half hour away, are famous for razor clams. An eighteen-hole public golf course lies adjacent to the city limits.
Cosmopolis offers many other attractions. It is a peaceful and safe place to raise a family. A community hospital, supermarkets, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and numerous other local businesses are located in the neighboring city of Aberdeen. Higher education opportunities are available through Grays Harbor College, whose main campus is also located in Aberdeen, with WSU affiliation for some four year degree offerings.
The area offers many amenities for its residents. The climate is mild, with wonderful summers and autumns, and rarely has significant snow fall. Housing is available and affordable. Public transit serves the area. There is an active local theatre group and regular musical concerts in the area. The community is also served by a regional library, adult education opportunities, social agencies, and various denominations of churches.
